Thanks CSX!

February 13, 2020 | Today CSX presented Friends of Dinsmore Elementary with a $10,000 check – yes, you read that right $10,000 – for School Beautification!

Dinsmore Elementary is an “A” school; let’s make it look like an “A” school from the roads. Come join us at the SAC meeting on Thursday, March 5th, and let’s make school beautification plans. And, this will make the School Beautification Work Day scheduled for Saturday, March 7, all the more exciting. Don’t miss either event!

Thanks CSX!

Little Free Library

February 2, 2020 | Little Free Libraries are popping up everywhere. Ms. Oliver, the school librarian, wanted one for the Dinsmore community. Friends responded to her request.

Friends built and installed the library. We’re proud it is an official Little Free Library (charter #93720) and displays on the national map.

During the opening ceremony Mrs. Reese, the school principal, cut the ribbon and unwrapped the library. Now you can take a book at the first Little Free Library in Dinsmore!

Thanks Target!

January 25, 2020 | Thanks Target for providing our third graders a field trip to the zoo! Target was very generous…each classroom will also have its own private, guided educational tour led by experienced zoo guides. This outside the classroom learning experience is one the students will always remember.

Friends of Dinsmore Elementary is pleased to provide grant writing assistance to the school. We too wish to thank Target!

ABCs & Numbers

January 10, 2020 | As a tutor, your classroom teacher provides you with teaching tools to help you tutor a student. In addition, we now have extra items available that you may find helpful. You can even allow a child to borrow them!

You’ll find all these items – and more! – in the copier room across from the Front Office. Don’t bother checking them out if you are using them to tutor – just grab and go. Record in the notebook only when a child takes a learning tool home.

Dinner with Santa

December 2019 | Thanks Faith Baptist Church! Because of you ALL the children at Dinner with Santa received balloon art without having to wait!

Veterans Day

November 8, 2019 | The American Legion Post #9 brought cupcakes to Ms. Nixon’s 5th grade classroom to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Women’s Auxiliary. The children responded to Roberta Tucker’s brief Veterans Day presentation with questions and comments.

The American Legion Post #9 Women’s Auxiliary is also providing a Thanksgiving meal to a needy Dinsmore Elementary family and, later, a Christmas celebration for a different family. The Women’s Auxiliary will deliver the packages to the school preserving each family’s privacy.

K to 2 Tutoring

September 29, 2019 | Tutors are still needed for the 2019-2020 school year!

Please sign up using this link. You will be contacted with information on how to begin!

Anyone who can commit one hour per week can make an impact! We are seeking a volunteer tutor for each K to 2 classroom. You are welcome to come and try it out for a week or two and then decide on your commitment, if any.

As a K to 2 Tutor, you’ll assist elementary school students to strengthen their academic skills and build their self-confidence. The K to 2 curriculum is easy to follow and no prep work is required. It is important to provide tutoring in the elementary years to prevent students from falling behind where they may never catch up. These young people thrive on the extra attention from adults who can assist them with the alphabet, numbers, sounds, how to hold a pencil, how to use scissors, and the enjoyment of reading.

  • Commitment to and belief in all children’s ability to succeed
  • Patient, friendly, reliable, and non-judgmental attitude
  • Ability to listen and determine what the student does not understand

The classroom teacher will provide flash cards, books, and other tools that are specific to the needs of their students. All supplies and materials will be provided. Just bring your smiling face!

You may be working with one student at a time or with a small group of students, based on the needs of the students and your preferences. Most likely you’ll work with the same student(s) every week. The relationship you build by supporting the same student(s) each week has a tremendous positive impact, and you and your student(s) will enjoy working together to accomplish goals throughout the year.

The same day/time each week works best. Generally speaking, classroom tutor sessions are held Monday – Thursday for a morning session (beginning 9am, 10am, or 11am) and a midday session (beginning 1pm). Tutoring happens from late September to early May and observes all school holidays.

Thank you for considering the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child!

Work Day Success!

September 28, 2019 | Thanks to the more than 25 volunteers, Dinsmore Elementary’s first School Beautification Work Day was a huge success!
